Rotary Club Malta's new anti-litter campaign, launched in partnership with Skolasajf centres, engages children in promoting cleaner streets by encouraging families to use eco-friendly car litter bags made from recycled plastic. Sponsored by a Rotary International District Grant and HSBC Bank Malta, this initiative aims to foster environmental responsibility across Malta.
Children taking part in the summer schools at the Skolasajf centres have shown great
enthusiasm in Rotary Club Malta’s new anti-litter campaign.
Rotary Club Malta has been visiting summer schools throughout the summer working
with the schools to educate the children and explain about the negative effect of littering
and how they can help reduce litter on the roads in Malta.
Jelle Houtsma-Grech, President of Rotary Club Malta said “ We came up with an unique
idea to reduce the litter on the roads by designing, developing and producing a bright
red eco-friendly drawstring bag which is made out of recycled plastic bottles”.
The Summer School children are taking the bags home to put into the families cars.
The children will be encouraging their families and friends not to throw litter out of the
car but to put it in the red car litter bag. Once the bag is full, then the litter can be put in
the appropriate bins and recycled where possible. The car litter bag can be cleaned and
used repeatedly.
Rotary International have given a District Grant to the Rotary Club Malta and together
with the support of HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c. they are sponsoring the production of 1,400
car litter bags.
Glenn Bugeja, Head of Corporate Sustainability for HSBC Bank Mata p.l.c. said “HSBC
supports this campaign as the residents in Malta want a better environment with cleaner
streets and a litter-free countryside. There has been great interest in this new initiative
from various government entities and organisations”.
“The school visits have been well received with the children being enthusiastic about the
new anti-litter campaign”.
One child from the Birzebbugia summer school said “If all 550,000 Maltese would litter
the island, it would become a trash can”.
